Prairiewoods Sabbatical for Spiritual Pioneers Navigating the Emergent Universe
Take extended time for yourself and your spirit with a four-week sabbatical
Prairiewoods staff

Are you a spiritual pioneer, someone who sets sail into mysterious waters with an eye toward the infinite horizon? If you’re integrating where you’ve been, wondering where you are and don’t necessarily know where you’re heading, sail on! Once you’ve ascended life’s oceanic crest where the rising is all about the milestones, titles and acquisitions, riding that beautiful wave now requires the wisdom, nuance and finesse of deep interior listening and focused reflection to emerge on another shore. To be truly courageous, compassionate and wily in the wild, unfolding universe, you need some extended time away to listen and learn, refocus and rejuvenate as you prepare to set sail on the sea of discovery. Consider coming to Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha) for a four-week winter sabbatical in 2018 (offered both Jan. 2–26 and Feb. 5–March 2). Four gentle weeks of quietude and rejuvenation await you in the beauty of 70 acres of woodland and prairie. Enjoy ready access to astounding resources for exploring the macrocosm of the emerging universe and the microcosm of your soon-to-be-astonished heart. Lean boldly into your emerging future, and become a spiritual pioneer for the 21st century. Most of the time is for quiet reflection, your own sacred germinating space. Three times a week (about 1.5 hours each), work with a Prairiewoods staff member to explore the work of spiritual pioneers to enlighten and challenge you along the way:

• Week 1, Seeding: Leaping into the New Universe (exploring the work of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, Thomas Berry and Diarmuid O’Murchu)
• Week 2, Grounding: Spirituality for a New Story (Beatrice Bruteau, Cynthia Bourgeault and Pope Francis’ eco-encyclical, Laudato Si’)
• Week 3, Planting: Feeding the Imagination for Shifting Paradigms (Otto Scharmer, Joanna Macy and Ken Wilber)
• Week 4, Cultivating: Meeting in the Microcosm of our Soul Work (such as journaling, dream work, poetry, prose, music, movement, art, gardening and healing energy)

Why should you participate in the four-week Sabbatical for Spiritual Pioneers Navigating the Emergent Universe?

• Because life in the precarious emergent universe beckons, and you are hearkening to its call
• Because your mission is to embark on unchartered waters and explore the unfolding universe
• Because the world awaits your courageous response
• Because you want to venture out to the edges so you can discover your center once more

The cost of this four-week sabbatical (offered Jan. 2–26 or Feb. 5–March 2) is $2,500 and includes sessions (up to six contact hours per week), four weeks of lodging and all meals. Lodgers only, please. A non-refundable deposit of $25 is required at registration. (Full payment is required to register online. If you prefer to pay the $25 registration fee now and the balance when you arrive, please call 319-395-6700.) If you want to stay in a Hermitage, you also will need to register by phone. If you have dietary restrictions that affect your health, please call or send an email to
