Tiny House Talks: Designing a Tiny House
Consider shifting toward less stuff and a more mindful life
Mark Stimson

Are you curious about tiny houses? Does the idea of downsizing and leading a simpler life sound appealing? Tiny houses are more than just small homes—they represent a shift toward less stuff and a more mindful life.

Participate in the three-part Tiny House Talks series at Prairiewoods (120 East Boyson Road in Hiawatha), which includes Introduction to Tiny Houses (April 18), Building Codes & Zoning Regulations (May 2) and Designing a Tiny House (May 16).

On May 16, facilitator Mark Stimson will give a brief introduction to tiny houses, including images from recent projects and a look at the history of the movement. Then check out some of the many ways to build tiny houses, depending on the climate, available materials and intended use. Stimson takes a very practical approach to designing and building tiny houses, with an aim to simplify and clarify the process from start to finish.

"The goal of my lectures and workshops is to enable people new to building to have a roof over their heads in just a few weeks, and to live mortgage-free thereafter," says Stimson, a 40-year veteran of the design/build field. He says, "A tiny amount of building science goes a long way when it comes to designing tiny houses." The session will end with a question-and-answer period.

The cost is $25 for the three-week series or $10 per session. (To receive the series discount, please register by phone at 319-395-6700.) Registration is requested by the day before.
